Description
Uses of Medicine:
Loperamide is an over-the-counter oral antidiarrheal agent commonly used to treat and manage various types of diarrhea, including traveler’s diarrhea, acute nonspecific diarrhea, and IBS-related chronic diarrhea. It is also prescribed for reducing ileostomy output. Safe for use in patients aged 2 and above, Loperamide works by slowing intestinal movement, allowing better water absorption. Its fast-acting formula offers relief from uncomfortable symptoms, making it a trusted choice for many.
Dosage & Side Effects:
The recommended dosage for acute diarrhea, such as traveler’s diarrhea is 4 mg, followed by 2 mg after each occurrence of unformed stool. It’s important to note that the total dose should not exceed 8 mg per day for over-the-counter use, while for prescription use, it should not go beyond 16 mg daily. For chronic diarrhea, the recommended dose is usually 2 mg taken twice a day. In cases of chemotherapy-induced diarrhea, administering loperamide 30 minutes before meals, four times a day, can help manage symptoms by slowing the colic reflex.
The most common side effects of Loperamide are dry mouth, flatulence, abdominal cramps, nausea, ileus, constipation, urinary retention, dizziness, and drowsiness.
