Description
Uses of Medicine: Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor used for the management and treatment of several conditions, including uncomplicated heartburn, gastrointestinal reflux disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, peptic ulcer disease, multiple endocrine adenomas, systemic mastocytosis, helicobacter pylori infection, erosive esophagitis, and gastric ulcers.
Dosage & Side Effects:
The recommended administration route for Omeprazole varies based on the patient’s diagnosis and preference, ensuring effective treatment results.
- The recommended oral dose for treating symptomatic GERD without esophageal lesions is 20 mg daily for up to 4 weeks, extending to 8 weeks if erosive lesions are present. Proper treatment helps alleviate GERD symptoms effectively.
- For H. pylori infection, the recommended adult treatment includes 20 mg of omeprazole, 500 mg of clarithromycin, 1000 mg of amoxicillin, and 500 mg of metronidazole, all taken twice daily for 14 days. If an ulcer is present, continue omeprazole for an additional 18 days. Antimicrobial resistance is common, so adjust treatment based on susceptibility testing if needed.
- For patients with hypersecretory diseases, the recommended starting dose is 60 mg of omeprazole once daily, adjusted based on individual needs and clinical response. If the dose exceeds 80 mg, it should be divided throughout the day. Long-term omeprazole use is not advised, with a switch to H2 inhibitors recommended for sustained treatment.
The most common side effects of Omeprazole are headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, cough, rash, vomiting, flatulence, asthenia, back pain, regurgitation, constipation, upper respiratory infection, and dizziness.
