Description
Uses of Medicine: Ramipril, generically marketed under Zorem, is a medication primarily used to treat hypertension. It can be prescribed alone or with thiazide diuretics. In patients aged 55 and older at high risk for cardiovascular events, Ramipril helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular causes. Additionally, the medicine is used for stable patients who have shown signs of congestive heart failure following a myocardial infarction. Ramipril offers essential cardiovascular protection, improving patient outcomes in high-risk groups.
Dosage & Side Effects:
Hypertension: The recommended initial dosage is 2.5 mg to 20 mg taken orally once daily, adjusted after 2–4 weeks based on blood pressure response. The usual maintenance dose is 2.5 mg to 20 mg, either as a single or divided dose.
To reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes: The recommended dosage begins at 2.5 mg orally once daily for 1 week, then 5 mg for 3 weeks, and gradually increases to a 10 mg maintenance dose daily.
Heart failure post-myocardial infarction: The recommended starting dose is 2.5 mg taken orally twice daily. If hypotension occurs, reduce to 1.25 mg twice daily. Gradually increase the dosage toward a target of 5 mg twice daily, with increases spaced about 3 weeks apart.
The capsules of Ramipril should be swallowed whole or the contents can be sprinkled on applesauce, water, or apple juice for easier consumption.
The most common side effects of Ramipril are dry cough, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and decreased blood pressure.
