Description
Uses of medication: Ketoconazole cream is an antifungal medication recommended for use in order to treat a number of fungal skin infections such as:
- cutaneous candidiasis
- tinea corporis
- tinea cruris
- tinea pedis
- tinea (pityriasis) versicolor
- seborrheic dermatitis
- cushing’s syndrome
Dosage:
- Ketoconazole cream should be applied once daily to cover the affected and immediate surrounding area. Clinical improvement can be seen fairly soon just after the treatment is begun.
- Candidal infections, tinea cruris and corporis should be treated for 14 days in order to reduce the possibility of recurrence.
- Patients with the tinea versicolor should be treated for two weeks.
- Patients with the tinea pedis should be treated for six weeks.
- For patients with the seborrheic dermatitis this cream (Ketoconazole) should be applied to the affected area two times in a day for four weeks or until the clinical clearing.
Treatment Reactions: The most commonly reported side effects of Ketoconazole when applied to the skin include:
- redness
- severe irritation
- stinging
- pruritus
Warnings and Precautions:
- Ketoconazole cream is not recommended for ophthalmic use.
- This cream is contraindicated in persons who have shown hypersensitivity to it.
- If a reaction suggesting sensitivity or chemical irritation occurred, use of the medication should be interrupted.
- It is not determined whether the Ketoconazole cream used topically may result in sufficient systemic absorption in order to produce the detectable quantities in the breast milk.
- Patients treated with this cream may develop a painful allergic reaction.
- Safety, as well as effectiveness of this cream in children, is not established.
